UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that idea โ€” anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
