Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Steady Energy Shipments to India in Snub of American Demands
In a defiant statement to the United States, President Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “uninterrupted” deliveries of energy resources to India. These remarks came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and asserted their partnership were “resilient to external pressure.”
A Message For the Western Countries
Putin's comments, delivered Friday, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, that have tried to urge New Delhi into scaling back its longstanding relations with Moscow. This comes comes after recent American measures, including additional import duties targeting New Delhi over its acquisition of Russian oil.
“Moscow remains a reliable exporter of fuel and everything required for the advancement of India’s economy,” the Russian president stated. “Russia is prepared to continue securing the uninterrupted supply of fuel for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”
Prime Minister Modi, while not naming energy explicitly, reinforced the theme by noting that “secure fuel supplies has been a key and crucial foundation of the Indo-Russian partnership.”
Challenging American Pressure
In the lead-up to the talks, during a television interview, Putin had challenged Washington's stance over India's oil imports. The president questioned, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India claim the equivalent access?”
The visit was his initial trip to India since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a visible show to demonstrate that the friendship between the two leaders persisted strongly.
An Unusual Reception
In a rare step, Modi personally greeted Putin as he disembarked. They shared a warm hug like longtime companions before enjoying a private dinner the night before the summit.
Modi in his statement called India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “based on mutual respect and deep trust.”
Reaffirming Defence and Economic Cooperation
The bilateral summit produced several key agreements in the fields of military and financial collaboration. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which sets a goal to increase twofold mutual trade to $100bn per year by the 2030 deadline.
Furthermore agreed to reshape their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia remains India's largest source of weapons, its share has diminished lately as India has sought diversify its procurement.
Their communique highlighted cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of advanced military systems, even if explicit reference of systems like the fifth-generation aircraft were omitted.
Ultimately, Russia and India affirmed that amid the “ongoing challenging, difficult, and volatile global landscape, the Indo-Russian partnership stay resilient to foreign influence.”
