Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Getting rid of undesired offerings might be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Sale

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 presents received by her by world leaders during her travels. The diverse haul is said to contain gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

The collection, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date remains to be announced, although the goal is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the revenue going to a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Collection

These gifts reportedly kept in a secure area on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused for years.

A complete inventory remains disclosed, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The discussion raised whether a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister must declare presents valued above €300.

An International Array of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mostly from within her party, with winning over foreign leaders and making Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.

This unique auction highlights a unconventional way to manage the protocol gifts that build up during a leader's tenure.
