Three photographers based in the island nation have managed to photograph visual evidence of red lightning, among the most elusive atmospheric displays on Earth, in which glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the heavens.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

This group of artists had originally set out to shoot the galactic core over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the southern region of the country on a specific autumn evening, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon.

Initially believing they would be fortunate to get good weather that after-dark period, but their shooting session turned into “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer remarked.

“He was checking his images for a Milky Way panorama and realized he had recorded red sprites,” the individual explained. “We just could not believe it – it resulted in joyful noises and numerous expressions in the night.”

Defining Red Sprites

Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, produced by storm systems. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that shoots towards the ground, red sprites ascend towards the upper atmosphere, forming shapes that resemble columns, carrots or even jellyfish. The initial image of a this phenomenon was captured – unintentionally – in that year, by a research unit at the an educational institution.

Fleeting and Otherworldly Sightings

They are so brief – persisting for a mere instant – that they are rarely visible to the naked eye, but one photographer was fortunate. “I was coincidentally viewing directly at an occurrence when it occurred – pure chance looking at the right part of the firmament and I witnessed a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.

Witnessing the occurrences was a dream for the artist, an honored dark sky artist. “It looks like you witness an unreal vision, it appears mystical … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it’s really interesting to observe.”

Technical and Innovative Mastery

Capturing a red sprite requires a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of scientific principles and creative flare, he said. “It is a deeply engaging form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”

Another photographer commented it was one of the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I witnessed the Milky Way glowing above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of light moved above a thunderstorm hundreds of kilometres away,” he described.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

Based on his understanding, there are no additional photographs capturing scarlet electrical bursts and the galactic core from the southern perspective in a single image.

“It represented a unique instance when you know you are seeing an event you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
