Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his squad can continue to cope with player absences after confirming that forward Kai Havertz is not ready for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been absent since the summer due to knee surgery. Initially expected to come back earlier in December, the manager stated the player encountered a problem when stepping up his rehabilitation and could not progress “the required stage.”

“Our experience helped us build a group that is considerably steadier and has more options,” commented Arteta.

Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash

This news creates a tactical puzzle for the midweek home game against Brentford. Arteta must choose between sticking with Mikel Merino, who got a goal as a makeshift striker against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who came back from a muscle injury off the bench. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus remains in contention after 11 months out.

Defensive Concerns Persist

Further fitness issues involve defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who sat out the weekend encounter. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in central defence for the league leaders.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on new players ahead of this season has resulted in a more robust situation to handle such unavailability.

Squad Depth Key to Premier League Pursuit

When asked if increased squad depth was aiding their league challenge, his response was positive. “Indeed, since the current term has seen more issues in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he noted.

“We learned from the past that we must deploy players in different positions, and they must be capable to adapt to new tasks if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Speaking about the complication previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “He followed all protocols. He could not go to the required step and now it appears like we have solved that issue.”

The manager conveyed his keenness to have him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Truly, Havertz is someone that, personally, I love so much for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his nature. I see him suffer being outside.”

“His fitness history is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I look forward to get him back with the squad playing because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
